THIRTY - Justin Wright and the Repercussions of the Wrong Choices

When the body began to rise off of the ground, Justin Wright wondered if he had made the wrong choice coming to work today.

He had sensed something in the air, something that filled him with a mindless dread. The only thing that was keeping him sane was his love for Owen. Otherwise, the dread that filled him would consume him completely.

He wasn’t physic, he wouldn’t go that far. But ever since he was a child, he had been able to sense things that were going to happen. He might not have been able to figure out what would happen, but he knew that something would.

His head would fill with a loud humming noise when something was about to happen. Normally it would build for a little bit and then, when the sound went, the something would happen.

The hum had been building inside of his head for three days now and it was all he could do to concentrate on what Owen was saying that morning. But when they saw the body, when they saw it move, the hum inside of his head finally stopped.

Shit, he thought. This is what he had been waiting for. He wondered what he could do, what he was supposed to do. His Grandma Lilly had told him that he was special, that he had been given a gift that could help many people.

How the hell was a reanimated dead man supposed to help him now? Beside him, Owen reached out and took his hand. “I love you.” He said.

Justin had a moment of shock before his heart thudded into overdrive. And it had nothing to do with the zombie man that was now standing in front of them. “I love you, too.” He said. Justin wondered if it was the fear that had made Owen realize his feelings for him. Then he realized he didn’t care.

Giving Owen’s hand another squeeze, Justin moved in front of him. Berkus joined them and they stood three to one against the zombie man.

A crowd of people had gathered around them. Justin wondered if he should have been keeping them away, making a perimeter, but he didn’t know what to do. Instead he watched as the zombie man came towards them.

“I’m so hungry.” The man said. “So very hungry.”

Being a man that was not often concerned with why things were happening, he instead focused on what was happening. The man lunged towards him and Justin pushed Owen back, pushed him back behind him.

“What the fuck is that thing?” Owen asked.

“I would bet on zombie,” Justin said.

“A zombie?” Berkus snorted. “Those don’t exist.”

“Tell that to Mr. Tall, Dark and Bloody over there.”

“So hungry.” The man said.

“Sir?” Justin tried. “Sir, what’s your name? Do you remember what happened?”

“I am Ignatious Finkelstein.” He said. “I am hungry.”

“Frankenstein?” Owen said. “Did he say Frankenstein?”

“No, Finkelstein.” Justin said. “I know the name.”

“Hungry.” Ignatious said. “I’m so hungry.”

“We have to get you to a hospital.” Justin said. “You’ve been in an accident.”

“No, no, I feel just fine.”

“But that’s your blood on the floor.” Justin said. He pointed to the tiled ground. “That’s your blood.”

“Oh,” Ignatious smiled at them, his teeth frightening. “I won’t be needing that anymore.” He said. “Besides, I can always find some new.”

Justin wondered what the man meant by that. He didn’t have to wait long to find out. The hum grew in his head to an ear splitting pitch as Ignatious lunged himself towards a woman who happened to be standing near, eyeing the carnage like candy.

As Ignatious tore at her neck with his teeth, Justin knew that he had made the wrong choice to come to work today. He always tried to do what was right, but he recognized that today, he had made the wrong decision.

When Ignatious was done with the body, he let it fall to the ground. The woman’s skin was pale and her neck had been ripped open. Blood trailed down Ignatious’ chin. “Hungry.” He said. “So hungry.”

The hum returned again, screaming inside of Justin’s head, as Ignatious Finkelstein lunged at him.
